Chapter Eleven

A City Council Meeting

W

ith a Mediterranean vibe, Milo’s Inn and Café offered a spectacular menu. Ellen ordered La Parisian—turkey, brie, cucumber, tomato, greens, and dijonnaise on a homemade croissant—with a cup of French onion soup. Tanya ordered the Greek wrap—kalamata olives, pepperoncinis, feta cheese, spring mix, romaine, cucumber, and tomato with red wine vinaigrette. And Sue ordered the lobster and crab roll—Lobster meat and herbed mayo with lemon served on a toasted homemade roll. Since it wasn’t too hot outside, they sat on a shaded patio beneath a vine-covered arbor among Greek statues and the calming trickle of water from a nearby fountain. While they waited for their food to arrive, they sipped iced tea and snacked on warm pita dipped in delicious hummus.

Sue fished something from her purse and brought out Kiernan’s card. “I’m going to text the mayor and let him know what we discovered.”

“I’ll text Brian,” Ellen said.

“Someone should tell the chief,” Tanya pointed out.

“Oh,” Ellen said, digging into her purse. “I have his card. Here you go Tanya.”

“I don’t want to call him,” she said. “You call him.”

When Ellen finished texting Brian, she called Chief Needham and relayed their theory to him.

“There’s a special city council meeting going on right now,” the chief said. “I believe it runs until four o’clock. I don’t suppose you’d meet me there to share your findings?”

“We just ordered lunch,” Ellen said. “It might take a while.”

“Take your time,” he said. “Could you meet me there around 3:30?”

“Hold on a second,” she said. Then, turning to her friends, she asked, “Should we present our findings to the city council today, around 3:30?”

“Kiernan just texted me that same question,” Sue said.

“We should go,” Tanya said. “We can make it by then, don’t you think?”

Ellen told the chief they’d be there. Sue texted Kiernan the same.
